Timothy TomasicI am interested in discovering a best practice for subcontractor prequalification in the construction industry.  Looking for either an industry application solution or local custom approach that can be centralized across a larger national organization.  Our current process is decentralized, and typically resides in spreadsheets, so visibility to the details is very limited.  Any input would be greatly appreciated!  Tim Tomasic  314-707-6280 cell.

Herbert Brownett When this string started almost a year ago, I announce Textura had just released a web-based collaborative network solution that would benefit GC's and subcontractots alike.  Since the porduct launch, a number of GC's, including several nationals have implemented Textura PQM and are bring thousands of subs into the network.  ENR magazine says Textura will be the "Facebook" of consruction and a major industry association is considering whether to recommed Textura PQM as an industry solution. For more information, contact Textura at 1-866-TEXTURA or vist our website: www.texturacorp.com.

Construction Imaging clients are using an eForms Solution that enables them to quickly and easily convert their paper forms to electronic forms and archive them into their imaging systems. This application eliminates document loss, storage space, and improves the approval processes. Clients are using this solution for Sub-Contractor Pre-Qualifications, Sub-Contractor Pay Apps, Timesheets, and Purchase Orders. A demo or webinar can be arranged if you would like to see this technology in action!

Jerry Ferrell I work with contractors coast to coast, sub tracking and approval is a major concern.  The problems are that most subs do NOT want to submit their information and secondly the process must be data neutral to insure that the information can be accessed and or downloaded to any system or tool that the contractor desires.  We have been asked to determine the feasibility of providing a Web based solution that would be hosted in a secure environment and provide access to subs for updating their information and contractors that are members to access the data, as well as, comment on the subs performance, etc.  This would only be sucessful if the industry gets behind it and the integrity of the data must be insured.  Additionally, this process needs to be software vendor independent to make sure anyone can utilize the data.  We are looking for input from Subs and Generals, as this could help all parties.  Please contact me at jerry.ferrell@ferrell.net.

One approached we have used is extending SharePoint to handle the workflow, document tracking and subcontractor qualification.  Please find below a link to a past webcast that lasts ~1 hour that outlines how we have extended SharePoint technology to better address project management for organizations.   The RFI, Submittals, Meeting Minutes are all examples of SmartForms, custom data collection forms.

My software is coming out with a module that has subcontractor prequalification as the first phase of production.  We survey our customer base and found some commonalities amoung contractors.  Please feel free to email me directly (andrewk@viewpointcs.com) and I can give you a webex of our offering.  You can use this as a starting point obviously.

Robert Lawyer We have had to make personal calls to some owners before they are willing to complete form and/or share finanical data with us.  We then complete a score card and rate performance and financial and safety.   The scores are then maintained in AP database with expiration dates and can be viewed from any workstation with proper security.   I will email you a copy. :) rsl

I believe many of the larger national and/or international firms use an internet based system whereby any subcontractor can go onto a company's external website and fill in the pre qual form. This ensures consistency of information no matter what the location.  I believe this is a best practice. If you get a list of the top 100 or 200 firms and check out their external websites you can glean what kinds of information they are asking for. My review indicates they are asking for more (rather than less) these days.

Hope this helps.
