John LeazerDoes anybody have any data on the advantages of paying an employee a monthly vehicle allowance versus providing them a company car or truck ?

John- first, in the spirit of full disclosure, my company leases vehicles for company-provided situations.

All things being equal, not providing a vehicle is most desirable as you have plenty of things to manage already.  Providing a vehicle means lots of administration and a little (but not much) more liability to your firm.

On the other hand, providing a company vehicle is a good retention/recruiting tool, represents a consistent image, and if done right costs less than an allowance.  Some of our customers have no choice in the matter; their applications require lots of aftermarket equipment and so it's hard to find employees willing/able to front that expense.

Before you decide, find a way to "cast-forward" all of the expenses associated with both legitimate options so you can arrive at a pretty reliable cents-per-mile number.  I'd be happy to send you the excel spreadsheets I use.  My email is joseph.stergios@efleets.com and my office # is 310-851-3460.

We have begun moving in this direction and are using Runzheimer to help us administer the new allowance program.  We have been very pleased to date.

We feel like on the dollars it is probably a push.  But from a liability perspective it is a much more palpable situation.
